International Observership in Orthopedic
Surgery
Offered in Co-Operation with the International Center for
Orthopedic Education

Observership Details:
This opportunity is a clinical observership near Boston,
Massachusetts sponsored by Henry DeGroot III, MD, Clinical
Associate Professor of Orthopedics, and offered in cooperation
with the International Center for Orthopedic Education (ICOE).
This opportunity is best suited for a young orthopedic surgeon
who is beginning his or her practice or has been in practice
for a few years. This observership is not suitable for a senior
surgeon with many years of experience.
The experience will focus on the practice of orthopedic surgery,
with emphasis on the evaluation, diagnosis, and surgical treatment
of the foot and ankle, as well as bone tumors, soft tissue
tumors, and metastastic lesions in the skeleton. The observer
will participate in the ambulatory clinic, observe (but
not scrub) in the operating room, and participate in
the didactic lecture schedule, grand rounds and other educational
programs available. In addition, the participant will be expected
to assist in creating materials for addition to the bone tumor
web site, bonetumor.org.
The participant is expected to complete a clinical research
project for publication in a peer-reviewed publication. In
addition, the participant will have an opportunity to present
a clinical research project at a local or regional meeting.
The experience is intended to be three months long, but there
is flexibility. A certificate of completion is provided by
the sponsor as well as by the cooperating organization, the
International Center for Orthopedic Education.
The program is intended as an educational
opportunity for international orthopedic surgeons, and strong
preference is given to individuals who intend to return to
their country to practice orthopedic surgery following the
conclusion of the program. The program is not intended to
facilitate the process of becoming a permanent resident of
the USA.

We encourage all individuals to participate regardless of
race, gender, religion or nationality. Participants should
have excellent command of the English language. Conversational
skills in French, Spanish, Portugese, or Italian are also
helpful but not necessary.
Travel, housing, and other expenses are not paid for by
the sponsor, and no salary is offered. The sponsor cannot
provide money-making employment for the applicant. Out-of
pocket costs would include travel, room, and meals. Free housing
is available to suitable candidates. The participant should
be prepared to pay for housing if the free housing arrangement
is not available or not suitable for the applicant. The free
housing consists of a simple private room in the basement
of the program sponsor's house. The room has no cooking facilities.
The program participant should be prepared to eat meals in
the hospital cafeteria or in local restaurants.
The participant is responsible for getting the visa necessary to enter the United States of America. We will supply a letter of invitation, an a "letter of support" for applicants who are accepted.

both have found the experience extremely valuable educationally.
In addition, Boston Massachusetts is one of the most beautiful
cities in America and it is home to many famous Universities.
The location is near many popular tourist destinations. Boston's
rich history and international culture make it an ideal location
for this educational opportunity.

submit, by mail, a complete curriculum vitae, as well
as copies of your certificates of medical training and
your certificate of orthopedic surgery training. You
should have the director of your orthopedic surgery
training program send a letter of support for your application
directly. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Applications must be completed by June 30th, for
the observership period that begins September 1. Applications
for the for the observership period that begins January
1 must be completed by November 1. Applications for
the April 1 period must be completed by February 1.
Observership period are normally three months, but there
is flexibility depending on the individual needs of
the participants.
Once we have received this information, we will
contact selected applicants by email and by telephone. If your qualifications
and interests are a good match for the goals of the
observership, you will be invited to participate. Applicants
may also register for this observership through the
ICOE, but the documents listed above must be sent to
us.
